General Responsibilities and Goals:
To assist the teachder in meeting the intellectual, physical, and emotional needs of autistic students.
Relationship:
The autism mentor is directly accountable to the principal and teacher to which assigned.
Qualifications:
- Must have attained a high school diploma or equivalent, show a sincere interest in working with children, be able to communicate appropriately with adults and children, be willing to participate in in-service.
- Meet the qualifications of "Aide III" as delineated in West Virginia Code 18-A-4-8.
- Certication as Autism Mentor required.
- Successful completion of a staff development program related to autism as determined by the State Department of Education.
- Two years of successful experience working with autistic students to attain autism mentor status.
- Physical ability and stamina necessary to complete all job tasks, including tasks related to ensuring student safety.
Terms of Employment:
Substitute personnel work as needed through out Preston County Schools.

2. Work Duties and Performance
- Tutor students as instructed.
- Reinforce concepts presented by teacher.
- Work with small groups and individuals as directed.
- Assist teacher in supervision of students.
- Prepare instructional materials.
- Operate equipment.
- Help with paper work.
- assist in housekeeping.
- take care of physical needs of students, as directed.
- Assist bus operators and teachers in meeting special needs of students.
- Ride bus/supervise students as assigned.
3. Professional Development
- Attend in-service and job-related training programs.
- Work toward skill improvement and efficiency.
- Complete required college training to attain Autism Mentor status.
